Since the 1940’s St. Louis based Scienco/FAST® is recognized as a top-quality OEM waste water treatment solution provider. Scienco/FAST provides superior treatment systems that assist their customers around the world to perform at the highest safety, compliance and reliability standards. The Scienco/FAST team works closely with marine engineers, naval architects, shipyards, managers and owners in each stage of the process. All activities from initial concept to vessel design to capacity calculation and manufacturing, are focused on delivering the performance and effluent quality as promised. Obviously, you may count on our support during on site-installation, start-up, commissioning as well as preventive maintenance and life cycle management worldwide.
About the proprietary FAST® technology, it checks all the boxes for waste water treatment because FAST®:
MarineFAST sewage treatment plants (or Marine Sanitation Devices) are available in three series. Selection of suitable model is dependent on Sewage Service Factor and Effluent standards.
Model LX: lightweight MSD for small vessels with crew of 1- 44 crew
Model M & MX: mid-sized MSD for medium vessels with limited space 1 – 79+crew
Model DV: custom designed for larger vessel with complement of 40 – 2000+ crew

CONTACT US FOR INQUIRYLand based generated sewage (or black water) and reject water (or grey water: kitchen, showers) is dealt with by a simple push off the flushbutton or drains from pipe to sewage main and is pumped to wastewater treatment facilities. At sea, vessels have to take care of the daily produced waste stream themselves and in a safe, environmental friendly manner. Therefore, vessels are fitted with marine sanitation devices which processes the wastewater before discharge into the sea. Vessels have to adhere to strict effluent quality standards as set out in IMO Marpol Annex IV and the related MEPC resolutions such as MEPC.159(55), MEPC.227(64) and the US equivalent USCG 33CFR159. Effluent quality is specified via limits of various constituents such as: BOD (biological oxygen demand), TSS (total suspended solids), Bacterial load colliform, pH-value range, Residual chlorine and nutrient removal efficiency (nitrogen and phosphorous). There are several treatment technologies which can be classed as either physical-chemical or bio-chemical based or a combination of both. For marine application other factors influencing the operations of MSD’s are important such as: vessel structure, location of wastewater treatment plants, the applied conveying technology, lay-out of the drain system, footprint and height at location, ambient temperature as well as expected transversal and longitudinal inclination during navigation. With over 40 years of experience you may rely on SciencoFAST’s experience for low cost, reliable and compliant operation of the units.
The magic is in the name: FAST or Fixed Activated Sludge Treatment. FAST uses a completely submerged fixed film process combined with a passive recylce system to provide an aerated, self cleaning bioreactor chamber which digest the wastewater and turns it into a clear, odorless and high-quality effluent. Unlike other conventional suspended growth systems FAST also supports more complex microbial culture, whereby higher ordered micro-organism predate the simpler ones, which reduces the mass rate of sludge accumulation leaving only approx. 25% volumetric sludge in comparison to other processes. The FAST process is explained in detail below:
